The Artist Residency Committee— commonly referred to as The Committee— promotes and regulates the artist residency system. The Committee is the embodiment of a sociological entity. It accounts for the people and social processes through which an artist residency is validated and officially recognized by the public.

Please Note:

In an attempt to provide access to the artist residency experience during the Covid-19 pandemic, The Committee is currently adapting the scope of the artist residency definition to include flexible, personal practices. The Committee encourages all artists to host residencies at their place of residence, regardless of available resources.

While different from their pre-pandemic counterparts, The Committee believes these residencies may provide much-needed structure and motivational sustenance. Please see below for modified Guidelines for Hosting an Artist Residency.

Guidelines for Hosting an Artist Residency

Residency as Service

Residencies should work in service of the participant. Participants should honestly assess their current physiological and creative needs. These constitute the mission of the residency.

Structure

An additional assessment of physical and temporal resources should inform the participant’s planning.
The physical and temporal scope of each residency will vary.

Residency participation may account for several days— or minutes— per week.
Individual participant needs should dictate total residency length.

Documentation

Physical, digital, and mental creation are equally acceptable. Documentation and record-keeping for all endeavors may contribute to the participant’s satisfaction and the longevity of the residency.

The Committee highly recommends hosting documentation on a public platform to facilitate communication between residencies.
